Initial Enquiry
Vroon vessel, Vos Master is a twin shafted vessel that originally operated with a gland packing arrangement as primary shaft sealing. Looking to avoid the issues that Gland packing give with regards tail shaft wear, ATZ was contracted to provide a retrofit class type-approved seal design.
The Port shaft was retrofitted (as a trial) in October 2011. After successful operation the starboard shaft was retrofitted in September 2013. Since conversion, ATZ have been entrusted to carry out all parts and service requirements for both shafts.
This case study describes the latest service attendance by ATZ on Vos Master.

Project Objectives
Provide parts and service expertise for the EVK type seals on both shaft lines.
Complete the overhaul of the seals within the permitted timeframe. Overcome any unforeseen on-site issues, and to the highest standards, without delay to the ship’s departure date.

Project Description
Starboard Shaft
The Starboard shaft was to be pulled as part of planned maintenance.
Shaft Seal work included:
- Taking seal alignment measurements to ensure the seal was running true and shaft alignment had been maintained.
- Inspection of all working components, all found in excellent condition.
- A new ATZ supplied inflatable seal was fitted as part of planned maintenance
- A new ATZ supplied sealing ring was fitted as part of planned maintenance
Port Shaft
The Port shaft was to be left in situ.
Shaft Seal work included:
- Taking seal alignment measurements to ensure the seal was running true and shaft alignment had been maintained.
- Inspection of all working components, all found in excellent condition.
- A new ATZ supplied sealing ring was fitted as part of planned maintenance. This required bonding around the shaft with ATZ supplied special tooling.
Both seals were assembled, aligned, and successfully air & hydro tested.

Conclusion
Both shaft seals were overhauled in good time.
ATZ parts were delivered well in advance of the Vos Master docking.
The on-site ATZ engineers conducted the overhauls to a high quality and to the satisfaction of the Fleet Manager. The overhauled shaft seals completed air and hydro acceptance tests, first time.
