The movement of goods – including everything from electronics to fuels, grains, minerals and fuels simply could not happen without the services provided in the marine cargo segment. The Marine Cargo industry is truly global – across borders, cultures, languages and continents every single day and hour of the year.
Most finished products and raw materials or resources will make part of their journey from source to destination on a ship. As the physical properties of these items vary widely, so do the vessels working in the marine cargo industry that carry them.

Sea shipping may not be the fastest way to send goods, but it is generally far less expensive than air or road transport with the large capacity and hence cost per volume unit being lower.

Apart from vessels designed specifically for containerised shipping, there are a number of different types of cargo vessel including:
  • Bulk Vessels – for carrying dry cargo like grain, ballast and coal
  • Break Bulk Vessels – for a mixed cargo like palletised items, bags of cargo or even large construction parts and smaller ships.
  • Reefer Vessels – for temperature-controlled items like foodstuffs.
  • Barge Vessels – for a mixture of containers or bulk items operating primarily within inland waterways.
  • Tanker Vessels – carrying bulk liquids such as fuel, chemicals or gas
  • Ro-Ro Vessels – for wheeled loads or vehicles that can be rolled on and off loading ramps

While the cargo carried can vary widely, all cargo vessels have targets to maximise capacity and minimise operating costs and turnaround times. For these reasons, many of the vessel systems are similar and operators will have similar priorities to keep their customers satisfied
