Our propulsion engineering services include inspection, maintenance, repair and overhaul of FPP, CPP, thrusters, stabilisers, steering gear, shaft seals and stern tube bearings. We can also service, test, adjust and retrofit complete propulsion control systems.

Thrusters

A bow thruster or stern thruster is a transverse propulsion device fitted to the bow or stern of a vessel to assist with manoeuvring. Bow thrusters allow the vessel to turn to port or starboard side, without using the main propulsion system, which requires some forward motion

Stabilisers

The function of a gyroscopic fin stabilizer, found on both sides of a ship’s hull, is to provide resistance to the excess rolling of a ship, in either direction.

The fins are designed to vary in tilt to counteract roll and are retractable when their assistance is not required, or the vessel is arriving in port.

CPP

In Controllable or Variable Pitch Propellers (CPP), the propeller blades are attached to the boss and their pitch can be altered via a hydraulic system. The blades are removable so if they incur damage, can be repaired without removal of the whole propellor.

For the advantages that a CPP system gives, the CPP propellor is also more complex. Instead of the Monoblock design of a Fixed propellor, the CPP has multiple moving parts in the propellor and shaft, and a hydraulic system with which to control the pitching.

FPP

A fixed pitch propellor (FPP) is typically a single component cast from Bronze. The blades are not removable so if they incur damage, repair is the preferred option. The alternative of propellor replacement is both costly and not short on lead time.

ATZ can support you with inspections and repairs afloat, in dock or even with a dive team. Either way, ATZ can support all your class approved FPP propellor requirements.

Shaft Seals

Shaft seals are essential to the reliability and environmental compliance of a vessels primary shafting.
They sit either on the forward end or both the aft and forward ends of a Stern tube on the conventional shafting of a vessel.
They can also be found on Thruster or podded type propulsion units. These seals are very similar to the aft seals found on conventional Stern tube arrangements

Steering Gear

Rudders turn a ship as and when required. Rudders are the principal system for the motion and control of the vessel. But we must remember that the rudder action is dependent on another pivotal system called the Steering Gear.
Steering Gear integrated with the rudder system defines the ‘turning mechanism’ for every ship irrespective of size, type and operation.

Sterntube Bearings

The stern tube is at the heart a traditional shaft driven propulsion system. It provides the conduit from inside the vessel and the engine to outside and the driven propeller.
Sterntube bearings are located in the Sterntube and serve to support the rotating tail shaft onto which the vessels propellors are fitted.
ATZ have the parts, service and experience to survey, supply and provide technical guidance on both white metal and composite derivatives.
